One of the most popular
operas of all time, Amahl and the Night Visitors tells
the story of how a crippled, young shepherd boy’s
life changes forever when he sees an amazing star “as
big as a window.”
When three foreign kings following the star in their
search for a wondrous child encounter Amahl and his
mother, the result is a timeless and inspiring message
of how faith, charity, unselfish love and good deeds
can work miracles. This production will be directed
by Francis Menotti, based on his father’s original
1951 production. |

“Miraculously…forever young. It’s comforting to know that a gentle little opera about a lame boy who meets up with three kings can still work its magic on us.”
- Opera magazine
"This one-act work (as in short for the attention-challenged) is one of those truly rare family works that is immediately accessible on every level—by both children and opera novices—and yet is still meaningful to the most seasoned opera-goers."
-
Dennis Polkow, Newcity Stage
“… a work that
few indeed could have seen and heard save through blurred eyes
and with emotions that were not easy to conceal.” - New
York Times
“The performance demonstrated the careful attention to detail which Barbara Landis, Chamber Opera Chicago’s General Director, bestows on all its productions. The conductor, Victoria Bond, is first rate…The setting was designed by Ann Davis and was also first-rate, as was the stage direction…Barbara Landis (as Amahl's Mother) managed this dramatically difficult role well, convincing in its progress from a strict disciplinarian to a sympathetic young woman. The parting of mother and son at the work’s close was moving indeed. Patrick Blackwell was a standout among the kings.”

“I loved it. It
gave me such a good holiday feeling…it lightened my
heart!”
